My neighbour has a lemon basil plant. The butterflies love it, and so do I.

He must’ve caught me giving the thing the jealous side-eye because last weekend he strolled over to our side of the fence and said the magic words:

“Help yourself to the lemon basil.”

And no sooner had the words left his mouth than I was on it like a swarm of hungry locusts.

Lemon basil is so incredibly aromatic that you don’t need much to instantly make a meal taste amazing.

I made a big batch of this paste and stashed it away in small containers in the fridge. It’ll go well with chicken, fish (more on that another day) and as an addition to other condiments like hummus or guac.

Lemon Basil Herb Paste (makes about 3/4 cup)

  • small handful of lemon basil leaves
  • 1 tbsp chopped chives
  • 1 large garlic clove
  • small bunch cilantro
  • 1 tbsp ginger root
  • 3 tbsps extra virgin olive oil
  1. Put all ingredients in a blender and process to a smooth paste. Store in the fridge for up to 4 days or the freezer for much longer.
